Human impacts
Human and bee interrelationships are very close. There are many humans that can have fatal or severe consequences when stung by a bee. A sting by a bee can cause an anaphylactic reaction in worst-case scenarios. Bees are very important to humans for pollination of food sources. The agriculture industry would not be around if it wasn’t for bees. With an increase in insecticide usage and climate change onset, there is concern for the health of bees, and the implications a loss could have worldwide (Delaplane & Mayer 2000). As well as acting as pollinators for plants, bees also collect nectar to produce honey within the honeycomb-structured hive. Honey is a major food source worldwide. The importance of bees is critical to humans’ way of life, and will need monitoring into the future to ensure their survival.
If the above arguments didn’t convince you on the importance of bees world-wide, there is also leading research into both bees products used in cancer therapy, and even bees using their advanced sense of smell, aiding in the detection of early-stage cancers (Luntz 1999; Oršolić 2012; Soares 2013).
