Communication
Honeybees have been observed to complete a dance on return to the hive after foraging for a food source. As shown below in the short you-tube video, bees are able to communicate distance, direction and even possibly abundance and quality of the food source (Flores 2008; Schürch & Couvillon 2013; Toufailia et al. 2013). How far the forager bee “waggles” determines the approximate distance from the hive, to allow other hive-mates to reach the same wholesome food source. As well as communicating with other bees about food source location, bees also have remarkable memories, in combination with recognising landmarks. This is further discussed in the next section “Memory”.
